What to plant after cucumbers or squash

After cucumbers, zucchini or squash, plant beans or peas, onions or garlic, cabbage family crops, or tomatoes.

Do not follow them with melons, pumpkins or more squash: they are all in the squash family. Check a bed below.

    Squash family rotation

Cucumbers, zucchini, melons and pumpkins share pests such as cucumber beetles and squash vine borers, some of which overwinter in or near the bed. Moving the whole family helps.

    A worked example

The trellis bed grew cucumbers in 2026. Plant garlic there this fall, or peas next spring. Put next year's zucchini in a bed with no squash family crop since 2024.

    Questions gardeners ask next

Can I plant melons where cucumbers were?

Rotation guides advise against it. Melons and cucumbers are the same family.

Can I plant tomatoes after squash?

Yes. Tomatoes are nightshades, a different family.

    Is zucchini a squash?

Yes. Zucchini is a summer squash, in the same family as cucumbers and pumpkins.
