What to plant after garlic or onions
After garlic or onions, plant anything outside the onion family: beans, squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, cabbage family crops or carrots.
Garlic is harvested in early summer in much of the US, so a summer crop can go in the same year, such as bush beans or zucchini. Check a bed below.

Garlic and onion rotation
Garlic, onions, leeks and shallots are one family for rotation and share soil problems such as white rot. Keep them out of a bed for about 3 years.
A worked example
Garlic came out of bed 3 in early July 2026. Bush beans sown right after still have time to crop before frost in many areas. This October's garlic goes into a bed with no onion family crop in 2025 or 2026.
Questions gardeners ask next
Can I plant garlic after onions?
Rotation guides advise against it. Both are alliums and share diseases.
Can I plant tomatoes after garlic?
Yes. Tomatoes are nightshades, a different family. A bed that finished garlic can take tomatoes the next spring.
Where should I plant garlic this fall?
In a bed that had no onion, garlic, leek or shallot for the last 2 years. Check it above.
