Brassica family vegetables
The brassicas, or cabbage family, include cabbage, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, collards, kohlrabi, radish, turnip, rutabaga, arugula, mustard greens and bok choy.
Radishes, turnips and arugula are the ones gardeners forget. For rotation, they all count as one crop. Check a bed below.
Check one bed
This check keeps nothing. The bed log on the home page keeps your beds in this browser.
Why radishes count
A quick spring row of radishes or arugula is a brassica crop. If broccoli goes into that bed the next year, the cabbage family has not moved, even though the bed looked like a "salad bed".
A worked example
In 2025 bed 2 grew radishes in spring and bush beans in summer. In 2026 you want broccoli. Bed 2 had a brassica last year, so pick a bed with no cabbage family crop since 2024. The beans in bed 2 do not change that.
Questions gardeners ask next
Is lettuce a brassica?
No. Lettuce is in the daisy family. Arugula, which is often grown beside it, is a brassica.
Are radishes brassicas?
Yes. Radishes, turnips and rutabagas are root crops in the cabbage family.
How long should brassicas stay out of a bed?
Rotation guides commonly say 3 years or more, and longer where clubroot has shown up.
