What to plant after potatoes
After potatoes, plant beans or peas, cabbage family crops, onions and garlic, squash, or corn.
Not tomatoes, peppers, eggplant or more potatoes: they are all nightshades. Check a bed below.

This check keeps nothing. The bed log on the home page keeps your beds in this browser.
Potato crop rotation
Potatoes and tomatoes share diseases such as early and late blight, so a potato bed should go 3 years without any nightshade. Watch for volunteer potatoes from tubers missed at harvest: pull them, or the nightshades never really left.
A worked example
The back bed grew potatoes in 2026. In fall, plant garlic there, or in 2027 sow peas in spring and follow them with kale. Tomatoes go elsewhere until 2029.
Questions gardeners ask next
Can I plant tomatoes after potatoes?
Rotation guides advise against it. They are both nightshades and share blight and other problems.
Can I plant potatoes in the same spot each year?
It is better not to. Move them to a bed with no nightshade for the last 2 years or more.
Are beans good after potatoes?
Yes. Beans are legumes, a different family, and a common next crop.
