What to plant after corn

After sweet corn, plant peas or beans, a common choice after a hungry crop, or squash, tomatoes, onions or cabbage family crops.

Avoid planting corn in the same bed again next year. Check a bed below.

    Rotating corn

Sweet corn is a grass, its own family in a home garden. It uses a lot of nitrogen, so many rotation plans follow it with legumes, then a leafy crop.

    A worked example

A block of corn grew in the big bed in 2026. In 2027 sow pole beans there, and move the corn to a bed that grew peas or beans this year.

    Questions gardeners ask next

Can I plant corn in the same spot every year?

It is better to move it, both for nitrogen and for pests such as corn earworm.

    Is corn good after beans?

Yes. Corn after a legume is a common sequence.

    What family is sweet corn?

The grass family, separate from every other common vegetable.
